The Requirement for First Aid

First Aid is the crucial initial care provided for illness or injury within the workplace until actual
medical treatment can be given, if it is necessary. For that reason you must have the appropriate
training before you can administer First Aid.

In the Health and Safety Executive’s Guidance on Regulations (http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/l74.pdf) the legislation says; an employer shall provide, or ensure that there are provided, such equipment and facilities as are adequate and appropriate in the circumstances for enabling First-Aid to be rendered to his employees if they are injured or become ill at work.

If you are self employed you are required to provide a First Aid kit and equipment to render adequate and appropriate First Aid to yourself. If you are working for or on someone else’s premise the responsibility remains the same but you can agree to share a common cover.

The employer needs to do an assessment of the hazards and risks in the workplace and make sure there are appropriately qualified staff. The guidance suggests there are four levels of provision:

  1. Appointed Person (AP)
  2. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
  3. First Aid at Work (FAW)
  4. Additional Training

Equal Adventure training will provide you with either the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certification or the First Aid at Work (FAW) certification you need to satisfy the legislation. As our courses are tailored round the participants we include any Additional Training needed to satisfy the requirements of the assessment of your provision. If you have any specific Additional Training you would like included in the course please let us know when you book so we can discuss it with you.
