Scope

“Working with disabled people in the outdoors” is a two day course that provides a more in-depth look at disability and ‘inclusion’ in the context of outdoor adventure. The Module is aimed at the full cross section of people engaged in the outdoor adventure industry – centre managers, advisers, coaches, instructors and volunteers. Its focus is on developing ‘good practice’ and instilling confidence when assisting people with disability through a variety of practical land-based and water sport activities.

All participants receive certification. This is an ‘Institute of Outdoor Learning’ approved course. 

Experience Requirements

While it is hoped that delegates will have completed Module 1 of our Training Programme it is not a prerequisite. However, it is expected that all delegates with have experience of coaching in at least one land or water-based activity.

Content

“Working with disabled people in the outdoors” is a practical and active experience with plenty of opportunity during sessions to ask questions and express your fears and reservations when dealing with ‘inclusion’. During this course the topics introduced in Module 1 are unpacked to explore further how the needs, functional ability and the aspirations of an individual are considered and used to improve your coaching techniques. The 7 sessions of this 2 day course will look at the principles of ‘stacking-up’ in communication, some of the problems of activity planning and inclusion as well as providing you with practical solutions to some of the equipment problems you may experience.

  • Session 1 Positive Approach to Communication (the benefits of positive language and an exploration of the ‘senses’)
  • Session 2 Function and Personal Experience (exploring bodily function through availability, feeling and control and understand how and why ‘capacity’ should be applied to inclusive activities)
  • Session 3 Planning and the Environment (considering factors that influence coaching sessions)
  • Session 4 Activities and Equipment (hands-on, practical session)
  • Session 5 Session Management and Activities (planning for successful group work – a practical activity)
  • Session 6 Assisted Movement – Fitting Equipment (independent moving techniques, dignity and control. A practical session)
  • Session 7 Dynamic Safety Management (review and alleviating concerns)
